Welcome to the first installment of The Finish Line! In this series, I’ll highlight my finished needlepoint pieces after they’ve been transformed into something special—whether it’s an ornament, pillow, or another unique finish. Every edition will celebrate the journey from an unstitched canvas to a cherished, personalized keepsake, meant to be enjoyed and treasured for years to come. It will also offer insights into the stitching process, finishing instructions, backer fabric choices, total costs, and more.
At the beginning of my needlepoint journey, I was also in the early stages of a new romantic relationship. As we were falling in love, I went through a phase where I made him four projects back to back (I know what you’re thinking and yes, we’re still together—thank you very much). I started with something for Valentine’s Day, then his birthday, followed by an eyeglass case (which, I confess, still hasn’t made it to the finisher), and finally, this cheeky present. My boyfriend, Mr. Man, is quite the Anglophile, so this canvas really spoke to me.
The Loo by Cabell Stitchery was perfect with it’s navy (Mr. Man’s favorite color) and pink (for a feminine touch of moi).
After purchasing the canvas, I posted about it on TikTok, and someone commented that they had their eye on the same one at our LNS in LA, Aristeia Needlepoint—but I snagged it before they could! That still makes me laugh—it’s funny how the algorithm brings people together.

Stitches
The navy letters and border were tent stitches. For the pink and white, I used a corduroy stitch variation (every stitch went in the same direction, so realistically it was a column of tent stitch and then a satin stitch for the rest of the stripe for each color).
Backer Fabric
I got it at Mood Fabrics in their LA store (off of Pico Blvd just before S Union Ave for the LA locals). Because it was a simple navy fabric I didn’t mind their half a yard minimum. I’ve reused the same fabric on a couple different projects now.
Finishing Instructions
Flat-back door hanger with two-tone cording in coordinating pink and white (I sent my own skeins). A 2024 year charm was added to the back in the top-right corner.
If I didn’t finish it the way I did…. I would frame it with a patterned mat board and hang above powder room toilet. Additionally, I would add long ribbon and bells for a dog potty system to hang on a doorknob (I know I’m getting creative over here). Example linked here. Do you have any finishing ideas?
Canvas = $63
Threads $6.50/skein x 3 = $20
Backer fabric (half yard minimum) = $8 dollars
Finishing (Used an independent finisher to be cost effective) = $45
Total Investment = $136
Originally I thought this would be adorable for a powder room but it hangs on the handle of Mr. Man’s Master Bath in NYC. Mr. Man’s thoughts on the needlepoint:
The piece is elegant and pretty to look at. It makes me feel thought of and cared for every time I see it, and it designates my space.
He’s perfect, and so is this finish!
See you in my next one,
Darling canvas and I just love the budget breakdown!
