Welcome to Bicoastal Stitches! Many of you may know me as a needlepointer Tiktoker or for those of you who aren’t on that side of the internet, an instagram reeler (which doesn’t quite roll off the tongue). Nevertheless, I'm thrilled to have you here as I embark on this exciting journey of sharing my needlepoint musings. As someone who splits her time between the bustling streets of New York City and the sunny skies of Los Angeles, I’ve found that needlepoint provides a calming and creative outlet amidst my busy lifestyle. I often joke that as a type-A, firstborn daughter, and ex-wall street banker this was my first hobby.
So let’s talk about how this all began…
Quite candidly, I mosied my way into West Village Knit & Needle which was a couple blocks from my first NYC apartment, and met the lovely owner Kiana. I am not even quite sure I even knew what needlepoint was or what possessed me to walk into that store. During my first visit there was a Bad Bitch Needlepoint trunk show going on (did not know what a trunkshow was or that it was happening at the time).
I got an 18 mesh project (bigger than an ornament size) a couple days after I finished stitching this random Bad Bitch street sign. Looking back, I laugh at how I jumped the thread all the way across the back.
Safe to say I was not hooked at all. In fact, I got background fatigue on this 18 mesh KCN Peacocks Canvas. Between the 80-hour work weeks and background fatigue, I put down needlepoint for almost 9 months since the initial LNS visit.
Fast forward to last summer, I quit my investment banking job (which was the best day of my life), started this new bicoastal lifestyle and most importantly picked back up needlepoint. I was in need of a creative outlet.
My life has changed a lot since I first started needlepoint, which I am sure many of you can relate to, given life's various challenges and changes. Needlepoint has been a constant for me. I often joke that needlepoint is the one thing I've remained consistent with, despite my tendency to procrastinate or have too many things going at once.
Why substack?
Simply because IG isn’t perfect and Tiktok’s are hard to find unless you save them. And some content is better in long form where I can spill all the details and hyperlink you in the right direction.
What this substack is not?
A way for me to get rich and commoditize my community. Not interested in that.
What this substack is?
A place to connect, document, learn more about needlepoint and share other life musings.
Why are you doing this now?
There a many new and seasoned needlepointers. My goal is to make the needlepoint world feel smaller and less complicated. I would not be where I am without stitchers who have given back to the community and hope to do the same.
Through this Substack, I hope to connect with fellow needlepoint enthusiasts, share my projects, and offer a peek into the things I love most about this craft.
See you in my next one,
I am so hype for this!!🥳🥳🥳
